Android Automotive OS

Role: UX Designer

Client: Under NDA

Heuristics Audit + HCD Principles Redesign Recommendations | Wireframes using Android Automotive OS

Client is one of the top car brands in the world with their own internal user research team. They hired a design agency, that I was contracted for, to redesign their existing infotainment interface experience. I had no access to their user research, but to previous 4 ux wireframe proposals utilizing multiple screens across the dashboard. Their ask was to revisit those proposals and translate their brand experience using a system that could potentially work on multiple paradigms such as Android Automotive OS.

As a starting point, I asked them to share their most current infotainment design and ran a heuristics audit. I, then, presented with Nielsen's Usability Heuristics and prioritized them according to level of severity and recommended design solutions.

Next, I researched into Android Automotive OS capabilities and constraints to design wireframes of the most used features like launcher, navigation, music, app switching, in addition to notifications, settings and climate control.

Left Hand Side Bar for Main Menu

Bottom Bar for Climate Control

Central Area Dedicated to Most Used or Favorite Apps Personalized to Each User

To maximize use of space for the "Cards" and utilize the bottom menu that was only used for climate controls (hidden on a drawer), I transferred the Main Menu Bar to the Deck

In order to minimize the amount of information glanceable to the driver, I reiterated the launcher to contain up to 3 cards

For the Launcher,I presented with 3 proposals: Static, Auto Hierarchical and Manual Hierarchical depending on User Preferences

Active and non-active apps remain in placement first arranged by the user when they personalize it.

Cards can move sequence according to the context of its use and activity. If user is en route to home and doesn't need to use navigation, but music or phone calls are more important, those cards can move "up" closer.

Cards can move sequence according to the context of its use, manually. User can press on app and drag it to new placement.

Sign in with your auto app username, phone or Google account to PERSONALIZE YOUR LAUNCHER

Use ALL APPS to manually personalize your launcher

MEDIA APP has a dropdown menu standard to Android OS to switch between different types of media (music to podcast to radio or audiobooks)

CLIMATE CONTROL is accessed by swiping bottom drawer up. All controls are done by a simple tap or sliding temperatures up or down

NOTIFICATIONS appear just like they would on your phone, HUN drops down from top of the screen and swiping up to dismiss notification or user can use a CTA button to either answer or mute a call. By swiping drawer down, user can access all notifications and its settings

THIRD PARTY APPS can be added via Google Play giving user the choice to use an app they're more comfortable with
